Naperville Animal Hospital employs a team of skilled veterinarians and animal care professionals who focus on responding to pets’ needs with the highest quality of care. Treatment programs offered by Naperville Animal Hospital include preventative care plans that protect puppies and kittens from harmful parasites and fatal diseases. Due to their fragile immune systems, these young animals can easily contract infectious diseases, so veterinarians stress the importance of routine vaccination regimens. Regular vaccinations do more than simply promote pet health and wellness; they build the immune system and enable the animal’s body to develop antibodies against a number of life-threatening conditions. While kittens and puppies do receive antibodies through their mother’s milk, these maternal antibodies wear off as the babies grow. By 16 weeks of age approximately 90 percent of puppies will no longer have them. Additionally, veterinarians cannot determine an individual kitten or puppy’s current level of maternal antibodies with complete certainty. Veterinarians protect these developing immune systems by administering a series of core vaccinations in 2-3 week intervals, from the time the animal is 6-8 weeks old until at least 16 weeks of age. Core vaccinations offer protection against the most common infectious diseases for dog and cats, many of which are lethal if contracted at a young age. Abbreviated as DAPP for puppies and FVRCP for kittens, these vaccines build antibodies against diseases such as canine parvovirus and feline distemper. Statistics show that virtually all kittens will become exposed to feline distemper within their first year of life. Parvovirus, a highly contagious disease, can lead to death in puppies within 72 hours. While most vaccinations will provide a pet with lifetime immunity against a disease, other diseases, such as rabies, require regular revaccination.
